Fostering STEM curiosity in primary school children
Technological advancements are driving progress at an unprecedented pace, and it is imperative that we are engaging our children in the realms of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Maths (STEM).
Primary school is one of the most pivotal stages of education, setting the foundation of a child's academic journey. By introducing STEM education at this formative stage develops essential skills and instills a mindset conducive to innovation, problem-solving, and critical thinking.
We recently held a panel hosted by 4 STEM ambassadors for Years 4, 5, and 6 which was hosted at Harris Primary Academy Shortlands. This was also shared live online to Harris Primary Academy Beckenham Green and Harris Primary Academy Orpington.
The ambassadors were:
- Susan Takpi - IT Consultant for Ad Tech
- Martin Fenner - Business Development Director for Tilt Consulting
- Reena Pathak - Software Quality Engineer at Dassault Systèmes
- Anfor Ali - BBC IT
Each STEM ambassador spoke about their career journey, their interest in computer science, and shared their experiences of working in the industry. The children were then invited to ask questions, and the panel were impressed by how insightful the questions were.
It was amazing to be part of such an event that was streamed across other academies. The children returned to the classroom buzzing with excitement about their future careers"

The buzz of conversation from pupils as they left the assembly hall was enthusiastic excitement about possible careers in STEM and a clear interest in discovering more about computer science.
I can't decide what I want to do when I grow up now! Definitely a job in an area of STEM!
