Gaining experience in a supportive environment: Apprenticeship journey with Tia

Tia is a Business Administrator Apprentice at Harris Academy Purley, having previously worked at another school as a Teaching Assistant. As part of National Apprenticeship Week, we sat down with her to find out more about her apprenticeship experience. 

What motivated you to do an apprenticeship?

I had been looking at administration roles but kept not being successful as they needed someone with a little more experience. It was my friend who suggested applying for an apprenticeship role to help me gain that experience. I was initially a little sceptical as I understood apprenticeships to have a low pay, but after some consideration, I decided to visit the government website, and this apprenticeship was everything I was looking for.

What have been the highlights so far?

It's been great being able to learn whilst I earn and that has been the best part of doing an apprenticeship. I get to learn different parts of how the departments work which I enjoy and is also challenging. I get to come into an atmosphere Monday to Friday where everyone is very welcoming and positive, and having my first Christmas work party and quiz was a great end to 2023. 

How is the apprenticeship supporting your professional development?

I like being able to learn the theory and then put what I've learnt into practice which helps it to stay in my brain and also give me some more confidence. 

What support are you getting?

I see my tutor every two weeks and I know I can always send her an email if I need some help, and she's always very quick to reply. Also all the staff here are very helpful so I know I can always get support from them too. 

What advice would you give someone considering an apprenticeship?

It's definitely worth it! It will help you to become more confident in the career you choose, and at the end of your course, there will be lots of opportunities for you.
