Kicking off an IT career: Apprenticeship journey with Morayo

Embarking on an apprenticeship journey can be like stepping into the unknown, and for Morayo, the decision to join Harris in April 2023 marked the start of an exciting new career. 

Before Harris, Morayo was working part-time at a bar in Vauxhall. However, the desire for a more structured and purposeful career led him to an IT apprenticeship. His role as an IT Technician has opened up new possibilities, combining practical experience, skill development, and the pursuit of a recognised qualification. In this blog, he shares his apprenticeship experience with us. 

My expectations were that it was going to be a gruelling experience and very monotone, but it has been the exact opposite of that! I have enjoyed getting used to the work-life balance and making good friends with my colleagues. I've also appreciated all the help that is offered to me on a daily basis. 

Overall, it's been a pivotal experience, and definitely opened my eyes to the world of hard work and getting out as much as you're putting in. I have received support from all angles; my tutor, my mentor, and manager all take time to check in with me weekly. I'm really thankful for how supportive they were early on and how they were willing to help me with the things I was initially struggling with. 

After my apprenticeship, I'm hoping to stay as as a Technician in the Federation, or maybe go elsewhere whilst gaining some cyber security qualifications, as I think this is the area I would like to specialise in later in life. 

For anyone considering an apprenticeship at Harris, I would say go for it with an open mind, and don't hesitate to ask for help no matter how small it may seem.
