What we are talking about...
Meet our People: Mandy Aylett, STEM Faculty Lead and North East Mentor Lead at Harris ITE Rss
Posted on: January 8th 2018
I have worked for the Harris Federation since 2011 and have benefited from the opportunities offered by a high performing and supportive organisation.
As an assistant principal at Harris Academy Chafford Hundred, I led the Teaching School to provide a CPD offer both locally and nationally. I was also the Designated Safeguarding Lead (DSL) and before that, I led the Speech, Language and Communication Needs (SLCN) Resource Centre for the borough at Chafford Hundred. These roles helped to develop my expertise in specialist fields such as safeguarding and SLCN as well as experience in liaising with a range of other agencies. A useful network of new colleagues within the Federation continues to grow, including many of my former colleagues from Harris Academy Chafford Hundred who have also been promoted to other roles within the Federation.
My current role as a Professional Tutor for the Harris ITE team draws on all of these previous experiences, in providing training and support for trainees during their initial teacher training year. I work in a team of tutors and administrators to recruit and then train the next generation of Primary and Secondary teachers. As a team, we provide day-to-day support and training for trainees and their mentors to ensure successful completion of QTS and ultimately secure progress for the children that they teach. Some of our trainees are recent graduates but many are career-changers who have decided to use the skills they have gained in industry and other professions to teach the children and young people at Harris.
Another important and rewarding part of my role is to lead on the NQT and transition phase of the programme. It is really satisfying to work closely with highly motivated trainees throughout their training year and to then see them continue to flourish as an NQT after graduation. Many of our trainees and NQTs go on to lead in their subjects or age phases or become mentors themselves.
If you’re thinking about training to teach, I would advise a visit to an academy and see some of the amazing work that goes on every day. Our talented teachers work hard to improve the life chances of their students. If you are already qualified and thinking about applying for a post as an NQT with Harris Federation, then you will have opportunities to network with successful colleagues and access to first-rate CPD throughout your induction year and beyond.
