Meet Our People: Dil Dias, Primary Professional Tutor at Harris Initial Teacher Education Rss

Posted on: December 8th 2017

"The idea of teaching Primary didn’t cross my mind until my sixth form tutor suggested it as something to consider. I agreed to volunteer for one afternoon at a local Primary school and ended up staying there for the rest of the year, then studying for a degree in primary education."

Volunteering gave me great insight into what the role of a class teacher is actually like, and I would recommend it to any aspiring teacher to help decide if this is the career for you.

Even though Primary teachers are generalists, it’s important to let our passions and interests drive us into developing specialisms. Developing specialist knowledge can have a dramatic effect on improving the quality of teaching and learning in primary education. For me, it was Maths, and I spent two further years training part time to qualify as a Maths specialist teacher.

I joined Harris seven years into my teaching career, and only wished I joined earlier. Harris is a unique and truly exceptional Federation of Academies. Having worked in many schools across different local authorities, I can say that there is nothing that compares to working for Harris. The camaraderie between academies and teachers is inspiring and, as a trainee teacher and eventually an NQT, you will be surrounded by an incredible amount of expertise.

You never know where a career with Harris could take you. I joined as a class teacher at Harris Primary Academy Kenley in 2013, was promoted to Assistant Principal the next year, and now lead the development of Mathematics in a number of schools across London, with a target of supporting over 200 schools by 2020 with a team of sixteen Maths Specialists.

Teaching for Mastery Lead involves me supporting schools and academies, within and outside of the Federation, to develop their approaches to teaching Maths. It’s a diverse role that has challenged me over the past year but has also brought me great satisfaction knowing that we are at the forefront of Maths education and have supported the development of many teachers across London.

I joined Harris ITE in 2017 as a Professional Tutor, and I feel incredibly privileged to be able to inspire and motivate future teachers as they begin their careers. Being part of a dedicated team, responsible for the development of over 150 trainee teachers is hugely rewarding. We work together tirelessly to support our trainees to develop the knowledge, skills and expertise they need to become excellent teachers.

My role takes me to many of our Primary academies to support our School Direct trainees. It’s impressive to see just how different all our academies are; you would only need to visit a handful to realise that every one is as unique as the community they serve.

I would urge anyone thinking about training as a Primary teacher to come and meet the Harris ITE team at one of our events and find out more about what we offer. The support you will receive in your training year is exceptional. Our programme harnesses expertise both within and outside of Harris to provide you with a solid foundation for your future career. The professional development you will receive at Harris beyond your training year is equally outstanding, from your NQT year right through to future leadership roles. If you are committed and want to reach your highest potential as a teacher, then this is the best starting point for you.

Teaching requires an incredible amount of commitment. Your success in this career hinges on your passion, and having a passion for what you do will see you through some challenging experiences. But there is no question that this is an extraordinarily rewarding profession, and at Harris, it is reassuring to know that you are part of a team, all with the same desire to make a difference to the life chances for every single child across the Federation.

What are the top three qualities you look for in a teacher?

  1. Adaptability and capacity for growth
  2. Passion for children and teaching
  3. Excellent organisational skills
